This week, in our farm share from Plant it Forward we got Asian Pears so my family found a pie recipe that used the pears. This was my first time making a pie and I decided to be extra ambitious and make the pie crust from scratch and even do a lattice design on top. The filling required peeling and cubing 5 large apples and 3 pears which was a tedious and time-consuming process. I discovered that pie crust is really just butter and flour that is mixed together by hand and then chilled. The dough and filling were easy to make so the pie bottom came together easily. The difficult part came when I had to figure out how to cut and weave the strips of dough to make the lattice decoration. After watching several tutorials and lots of redos, I had a beautiful pie! It also tasted good which made it even better. The only thing I would change for next time is to make the pie lattice thinner but that is something you learn with experience.
